In 2000, I traveled to the land of the “garimpeiros” in the Brazilian
Amazon. The garimpeiros are self-employed gold diggers who came to the
region to work in one of the richest deposits of alluvial gold ever found.
In this world of men, I discovered the hidden universe of women: the Amazons.
Whether cooks, shop owners or prostitutes, they were all women of strong
personalities. Just like the gold-seeking men, they had come in search
of an Eldorado. What had they expected? What did they find?
This project
questions the myths and dreams that drive men and women to leave the world
they know, venturing out to discover a new life of countless expectations.
