Portfolio in “Camera International no. 9”

On several occasions from 1981 to 1984, I shared the daily life of a family in Tunisia, in particular the intimacy of the closed universe of the women in this family.
Little by little, as I slipped into the everyday routine of their culture, personal relationships became closer. Under such conditions, I am fully aware that my camera can transgress cultural limits, creating an important responsibility on my part.
To avoid betraying the confidence these women showed in me, I eliminated little by little my “exotic” regard and did my best to take these photographs in full respect of a culture to which I had great difficulty in adhering.
